i dont show off my tattoos or talk about them much unless someone is genuinely interested. ive never felt the need to say "hey check out my shit" because i get them for me not for others or for shock or whatever. anyways, since this is a small forum & i we all share things from time to time beyond music i thought i bring it up im finally starting on my back piece today. it will be my entire back & today will just be the outline. the design is something my old tattoo artist eric maaske painted back in the 90's. its his take on an old traditional design. i remember when he first finished painting & put it up on his wall @ the shop. i thought "thats what i want for my back". well through the years i got side tracked & never started on my back. eric died & i thought i would never do it. later i saw a different design something more "modern" that my friend justin (who does my tattoos now) was going to rework to give it a traditional feel. after really thinking about it was clear i needed to stick w/ what i originally wanted (i LOVE traditional style work) & knew justin was do a great job. so im heading out the door now for the outline. ive attached the painting eric originally did. i have no doubt justin will make it come alive. I like that dragon bro.
Hey, if you don't mind educating me, what makes this traditional? I don't know enough about tats to know what traditional vs non-traditional looks like.
I never took the time to get a tattoo. I like them plenty though. I keep telling myself I'll do it but it is hard for me to commit.

I never took the time to get a tattoo. I like them plenty though. I keep telling myself I'll do it but it is hard for me to commit. OOPS!!! i originally posted this in your post under "modify". i guess when being a moderator ive got to pay more attention :-) the dragon has a bob roberts (tattoo artist from LA whos been around for years. he's the real deal) feel/style to it. the girl is VERY sailor jerry/paul rogers style (which is my favorite). when people refer to "traditional" in tattoos its an "american"look/style of tattooing. bold/solid, bright colors. has that WWII, post WWII artwork. most uneducated people say it looks "simple" or "cartoonish". think of it this way, people that dont understand true punk call it crappy playing or think punk is only a spiked leather jacket, big purple mohawk, & 3 chords. the images typically have a certain (but not always) theme to them : pin up girls, skull & cross bones, bald eagles, ships, anchors, swallows/sparrows, kewpie dolls, daggers, black cats with number 13, black panthers, hotstuff devils, man's ruin stuff (IE: girls, booze, gambling) etc. all with big bold lines. the old guys that are my favorite from this era are : sailor jerry (he's probably the best known outside of ed hardy*) paul rogers bert grimm doc king * NOTE : ed hardy worked under sailor jerry & is well respected for his work. unfortunately he licensed some of his work & his name & now we have a whole sub-culture that wears "his" cloths & buy anything with his name on it & its a an embarrassment to say the least. no doubt sailor jerry would not approve & would be rolling in his grave. if you get discs from netflix to rent & like documentaries, i cant recommend enough "Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry". its FANTASTIC!!! i cant stress this enough. he was punk rock, he was a pirate, he was a rebel, he was the man! hope that helps a bit. as far as getting a tattoo, i say if you want it, do it but make sure its what you like. make sure you go to a reputable shop AND artist. ask to see their portfolios. say you want a certain style & their portfolio doesnt have that style, prob not the guy to go w/. IE : you want a traditional tattoo & their portfolio is all black & gray fine line.... probably not the guy to work on you.

well justin did the pin up & most of the dragon. he still has to do the scales on the dragon & the wind bars/waves & then the outline will be done. i think the next session will be finish the outline & then start w/ shading in the wind bars. all that black is going to hurt. the older i get the more they seem to hurt. not to mention the places i only have left seem to be the more sensitive spots. really not looking forward to doing the front of my throat when we get to that.

I never knew Ed Hardy was actually a talented guy. I just thought it was designer clothing for urban fashion cliques. I learned something. Two women who work for me wear that stuff all the time.
I love documentaries. I'll see if I can add it to my queue. I've heard of Sailor Jerry before. As a punker, I follow your punk analogy real well.
I once saw a badass devil girl tattoo. Would that sort of thing be considered classic?

Ooooohhhhhh...ooooooowwwwwww...gonna do your throat next huh Herb? next... not sure, but its on the list. NOT looking forward to that one. Well you've done your neck already but the throat seems rough considering the muscles there and stuff. I've spent 4 hours on a pin-up on my right side rib cage and haven't finished that because it hurts so bad. So far my ribs have been the worst. How's the healing on your back? Probably makes it uncomfortable to sleep, drive and sit down.
