I'm not reading The Idiot by Dostoevsky. It's starting out a little slow, but there are some cool characters already and I can tell Dosotevsky is setting a stage for something good.....

I've always been fascinated by the idea of controlling one's own dreams.

This guy is quickly becoming one of my fave authors. I read The Samurai over Christmas and thought it was amazing. This one also excellent...a bit depressing so far but an amazing study of faith (and the lack of), endurance, suffering, pride, etc. Beautiful writing, too....he brings the scenery to life and tells the story through the scenery in really vivid ways. I think The Samurai is being made into a movie, actually...and isn't del Toro in that movie? Next up for the summer: THE IDIOT.

hmm, actually the movie that was supposed to be made is Silence, which I'm reading: del toro, scorcese, day-lewis, but I'm not sure if it is being made or not...

rhu, not sure if you're still keeping tabs, but The Idiot is really good. I just finished "Book 1" (about 175 pages into the 600 page book) and it got more wild and interesting by the page. A bit of a slow start (focus on the characters...not so much the plot....in the early going and the plot will come to you. Dostoevsky's characters are always so vivid). Can't wait to read the rest of it! If only baby Diaz didn't sap so much energy and time...I'd be further into it...

i don't like some of wallis' recent blog posts, but the book seems very thought provoking, so far.

I've read a bunch of bits and pieces of God's Politics. I thought it was pretty good from the stuff I read. I typically like Wallis, although I'm not sure what blogs you are talking about that he has done recently. I use to keep up with him and subscribe to Sojouners, but it has been a few years... how is Nashville treating you Larry?

nashville is amazing. great music, great outdoor activities... great town. i've always loved living here.
wallis, from the tone of recent blogs, has become just another liberal, couching his ideas in christianity. he has a recent rant about how un-christian libertarianism is, including the fact that it's almost overtly racist.... and tied them far more closely to the tea party folks than is reality.

rhu, I finished the Idiot this afternoon. It ended up being a really fascinating read, though at times the plot was a little confusing (despite being 615 pages in the edition I have, lots of the action takes place away from the narrative, and of course, in true Dostoevsky style, there are half-truths and different views and perspectives about everything). Still, it is an amazing book, and the last 125 pages or so are really gripping and create a great ending for the story. As usual there are AMAZING characters that you don't forget, and some powerful, funny, scary, creepy, and cool scenes. Even though it was a small part of the story, there is this one part where the main character has a seizure, and it is written so amazingly. There are a number of dramatic confrontations between characters too that are so cool. Anyway, I'd recommend it, but it does take patience (for me it did).
